The new Driver CPC came into force on the 10th September 2008 for Bus & Coach drivers, and the 10th September 2009 for LGV Drivers.
If you already hold a C, C1, CE, C1E, D*, D1*, DE* or D1E* licence issued before these dates you will have 'acquired rights' and will not be required to take the initial qualification, however, both new and existing drivers will be required to complete periodic training, currenty 35 hours every five years. The 'ongoing' or 'periodic' training does not have to be taken in one go, it can be split up into five seperate days each lasting 7 hours so that 35 hours is totalled before the five year expiry of the drivers qualification card (DQC).
* Those who have the entitlement on their licence stating 'not for hire or reward' (Code 101) will not have acquired rights and will have to take the initial qualification should they wish to drive professionally.
What is Driver CPC?
Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence ) has been introduced across the European Union to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety. All professional bus, coach and lorry drivers must hold a Driver CPC if they want to drive for a living.
How will it affect me?
As a new driver from the above dates, you will need to pass the Driver CPC theory and practical tests if you intend to drive professionally. Once you have passed these tests you will also need to undergo ongoing periodic training to keep your Driver CPC qualification.
NB: Drivers of lorries exceeding 3.5 tons, and minibuses with 9 seats or more must obtain a Driver CPC.

The Category B Licence, allows vehicles to be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM), or a trailer over 750kgs providing the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.
To Tow heavier trailers then category B+E would be needed.
The Category B+E licence allows vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM to be combined with trailers in excess of 750kgs MAM. In order to gain the entitlement new category B licence holders have to pass a further practical test for category B+E. There is no category B+E theory test. For driver licensing purposes there are no vehicle/trailer weight ratio limits for category B+E.
We offer experienced instruction using our own vehicle.
We would recommend that all prospective students take advantage of our Driver Assessment. The assessment not only gives the student an insight into what is involved in driving B+E, but also one of our instructors the opportunity to evaluate the number of training days required for the student to reach the D.S.A. Test standard. The assessment is for two hours and includes reversing on our own large manoeuvering area, as well as driving on the Public Highway. Assessments are normally conducted Monday-Saturday between 8.00a.m. and 4.00p.m. Although a limited number are available on evenings and weekends.
Courses are normally conducted between 8.00a.m and 4.00p.m Monday-Saturday. A Training Day will be for four hours (one student to one instructor). Evening training (during the summer months) from 4.00p.m is also available.
